I've noticed something recently that I'm not very happy about. One of my favorite bands, Everything But the Girl, is apparently good shopping music. I've heard them in the Gap, Banana Repulic, J. Crew and possibly even Target.

I know enough about marketing, consumerism and social psychology to assume that there have been studies to find out what types of music make people want to buy more products. My theory about EBTG is that they are perfect for hipster shopping because most people haven't heard their music, yet their songs still seem recognizable. They've got mellow beats, soothing female vocals, and they are just techno enough to be cool but not too techno to be distracting. I'm listening to Walking Wounded right now, in fact, and I have the sudden urge to buy some seude pants, or a linen shirt with snaps instead of buttons, or something equally ridculous.
