I've been reading and watching a lot of politically-themed media lately. What's going on with our foreign policy in general and with Iraq in particular is both fascinating and utterly frightening. The more I hear from extremely intelligent people about these global issues, the more I am struck by how one-sided most of the debate has been on foreign policy. Conservatives have the floor because Bush is popular and is saying things that make Americans feel "safe." But what he's really doing, more so now than ever before, is covering up his stupidity and short-sightedness with false notions of security.
What we need is more informed, more intelligent and more public debate on these major policy decisions. Sure, you get some of this on CNN and MSNBC, but these networks are watched by only a small portion of the population. Maybe it's naive of me, but I really feel that if people knew all the facts and consequences of our making unilateral foreign policy decisions, the popular sentiments would be much, much different. So, let's open up the floor on primetime television. Bring out charismatic, passionate, intelligent, people on both the left and the right to help get out the facts. FOX-it-up a little to grow an audience, but still focus on making people more aware, driving them to be more active in the decision-making process that is going to affect everyone deeply in the years ahead.
